Kingfisher
Cottage, Mill Lane, Barrow-upon-Soar, Leicestershire Barrow-upon-Soar is centrally located in the Soar Valley and on the River Soar itself. The friendly, medium sized village has numerous amenities including a supermarket, post office, baker shop, butcher, news agent, hairdresser, medical centre, dentist, and pharmacy. There is also a fish and chip shop, several take-aways, and an excellent Indian restaurant all also within easy walking distance. For more robust refreshment, Barrow is well blessed with pubs - there are six and one hotel. a variety of watercraft can be hired from Barrow Boating, located just the other side of the hump-backed bridge. Horse riding, golf and fishing are all available nearby, and the indoor swimming pool at the main school is available for public use. Slightly
further afield you can visit Nottingham with its many historic buildings,
including its famous castle, or Southwell, a charming old market town with
numerous historic buildings, Southwell Minster being a great attraction,.
Newark is another old market town with many interesting buildings and an
impressive castle, and Lincoln, dating back to Roman times and noted
particularly for its magnificent hill-top cathedral. It is a medium-sized
city with many historic buildings. The Leicestershire Wolds display what is
considered the county's best and most typical countryside. On the eastern edge lies Belvoir Castle, home of the Duke of
Rutland, and the Vale of Belvoir. Stilton cheese was first manufactured, and
still is, in several villages between Belvoir and Melton Mowbray. Oakham
is a charming old market town with many interesting buildings, and just east
of Oakham is Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made bodies of water in
Europe. There are numerous activities to choose from - sailing, fishing,
biking, and walking - so a day trip is recommended. There is just an
absolute multitude of things to see and do, too numerous to mention. Kingfisher Cottage: was built around the turn of the twentieth century, together with five others adjacent, to house workers employed at the mill then in existence just across the nearby hump-backed bridge. Semi-detached, and fronting onto the quiet by-way of Mill Lane, it offers charming, comfortable accommodation. Over the winter of 1999/2000 extensive work was carried out to bring the cottage up to a very high standard, and it now sleeps 4 guests, with a bed settee sleeping 2, for the occasional extra guests. The ground floor is open plan with a kitchen / dining / sitting room, well equipped with washing machine, dishwasher, cooker, fridge, and all of the necessary crockery and utensils. There is also a double glazed conservatory with a door into the garden; this has a paved area and beyond this a lawn. At the far end of the garden is the Grand Union Canal, the area between lawn and canal bank being slabbed and gravelled. Walk down the garden to the canal edge and you will see this is a mooring. To the right of the cottage is an open area sufficient to park one medium sized car, and probably two small ones.
Upstairs you will find the original bathroom, straight ahead the second bedroom, and to your right the entrance lobby and closet area for the master bedroom. A welcoming feature of the master bedroom is a small fireplace, with the added attraction, of course, of the French doors and balcony. This bedroom has a rather magnificent four-poster bed, and the second bedroom is only slightly smaller. |
