Primrose Cottage, in The 'Model Village' of Milton
Abbas Primrose Cottage is set in one of Englands prettiest villages, being one of the semi-detached cob and thatched houses that make up this unique collection of cottages, created around 1770 by Lord Milton and landscape artist Capability Brown. The story alone of how, over a generation, he erased the town of Middleton to allow himself to enjoy exclusively his stately home and the peace and quiet of the Abbey makes the village worth a visit. The 'model village' itself is said by many to be one of the prettiest in England. Certainly each house has individual charm whilst the winding valley setting with its lake at the bottom is the ideal base for the Dorset experience - countryside, Thomas Hardy, walking, beaches... Relax.... slow down.... you are now in Dorset. You will never be stuck for interesting things to do, for example the Tank Museum at Bovington, the Fleet Air Arm Museum near Ilchester, Monkey World at Wareham, or you can turn back time and tour the whole of the famous Jurassic Coast. For walkers and hikers, take the magnificent Dorset Coastal Path and and simply enjoy the staggering views across the bays and coves; or take a trip to the famous lighthouse at Portland Bill. The charming seaside resort of Weymouth is just a few miles away, offering a large variety of shops and a beautiful safe, sandy beach, with boat trips available from the quayside. Slightly further afield is Lulworth Cove, the stunning, almost perfectly circular, sheltered beach, with it's narrow entrance opening to the sea beyond. Picturesque villages, busy towns, safe and sheltered beaches, excellent restaurants and pubs bristling with the smuggling history which is inherent in the years gone by of Dorset. There ie a PO/village shop just across the road, where milk, cheese, frozen food and other basic foodstuffs can be bought, and there is an excellent pub, "The Hambro Arms", in the village and within walking distance. There is also a tea place serving snack lunches and of course cream teas.
Primrose Cottage: is a Grade II listed building, having a beamed sitting-room, of course, and an inglenook fireplace with wood stove, it is truly a cottage in which romantics can relax. Low doors remind you of the building's age but the 21st century has taken over everywhere else from a modern kitchen and bathroom to the two bedrooms, which are a double and a twin. The kitchen is well fitted with electric cooker, microwave oven, fridge with freezer compartment, spin dryer and dishwasher. Outside is a wild hillside garden to attract butterflies and where in spring you will see orchids. It catches all the southern sun particularly on the patio just outside the kitchen. Get up early and you can disturb the deer! Car parking is at the side of the cottage (off road). |
