Otter and Heron Cottages, Waterside,
Poolewe, An area of supreme natural beauty, imagination, history and mystery............imagine the Northern Lights so breathtakingly beautiful they will remain with you forever. Where the nights never get truly dark for six weeks either side of midsummer; a place where you can walk along the shore to see the spectacular sun sets.......... Perfect for honeymoons, or an ideal base for walking, climbing, mountaineering and canoeing. sea fishing is free from the jetty at the bottom of the garden, and loch and river fishing can be arranged. Poolewe is a tiny, neat village in the sheltered haven of Loch Ewe, with a pleasant climate benefiting from the Gulf stream. The world famous Inverewe Garden is within walking distance, and the village also has several good bars, hotels and restaurants. Visit Loch Maree, which must surely be the most romantic loch with it's tale of unrequited love, or take a boat trip to round the off shore islands. For history lovers see where the Druids worshipped over 1500 years ago on eerie Isle Maree, or visit the Wishing Tree with the coins still hammered in to the trunk; find the Holy Well which is said to hold the cure for madness, or simply wander for miles along the beaches, hill and burns with their ancient Gaelic names. Gairloch has a 9 hole golf course, and the Heritage Museum is well worth a visit, or take advantage of the excellent facilities at the leisure centre. Golden eagles, buzzards, and the White Tailed Sea Eagle fly regularly over the bay, and last year sightings of the Great Northern Diver were reported; in the hills you will probably see great herds of deer, and possibly the odd wild cat, also inhabitants of the area. Of course, the region boasts it's fair share of distilleries, Muir of Ord and Clynelish, or take a trip to Skye to Talisker. Poolewe is approximately 75 miles from Inverness, so the nearest nightclub, shopping mall, bingo hall or cinema is a long drive, but there is a well stocked general store in the village, and a mobile butcher and banks. You will find more facilities slightly further afield at Gairloch and Aultbea.
The Accommodation: Both of the cottages are comfortably furnished, and have their own patio areas and views over the loch. The kitchens are comprehensively equipped with cooker, fridge with small freezer compartment, microwave and washing machine. They each have a double and a twin bedroom, with electric blankets if required for those chilly evenings, and a bathroom with a bath, power shower, basin and WC. The living rooms are comfortably furnished and have colour TV. |
