Recently converted single-storey stone built Cumbrian cottage on site of Hadrian’s Wall between turrets 51A and 51B.  (Wall is under road at this point, but visible 1 mile away and at different points all along road.)
Cottage on roadside, in open position, with plain lawn garden to rear (south). Striking view across Irthing valley to North Pennines.  Single garage and parking area.  Central heating, all rooms have oil fired heating.  Easy to run.
Simple and bright, but not luxurious.

Ideal location for visiting sites of Roman historical interest:
Birdoswald camp - Camboglanna - 3 miles,
Housteads camp - Borcovicium - 15 miles, 
Vindolanda camp -  19 miles, Chesters camp - Cilurnum - 25 miles, Roman Military Museum Temple of Mithras- 24 miles

Good location for walks:
Coombe Crag Wood within walking distance of cottage - buzzard, red squirrel, greater spotted woodpecker;
To Gelt Woods walk - 10 miles; To Talkin Tarn, rowing boats and round walk - 7 miles. Many different marked footpaths across area.

Scottish Border, 20 miles: Gretna and shopping complex; Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Caelaverock, Walk by Solway, PowfootDrive to the Hermitage beyond Newcastleton and the beautiful hills of Langholm.

Eden Valley area and Penrith, 30 miles: Entrance to Lake District; Eden Valley Woollen Mill, Armathwaite;
Village Bakery, Melmerby.

Northumberland boundary, 4 miles: Border castles, Gardens, Pennine Way walk,  Hexam Abbey - 25 miles, Newcastle - 1 hour drive.

Carlisle, 15 miles: Cathedral, Castle, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery; Tesco supermarket on outskirts near junction 43 of M6.

Brampton, 7 miles: Shops - groceries, post office, fruit and vegetables, bakery, garages;  Church with Burne Jones stained glass windows.

Lanercost Priory, 3 miles: Church and English Heritage site.

Banks village, 1 mile: Letter box, telephone box.  No shops.

The Cottage:
Sitting room with views to south and fells.  Wood grained floor.  Wood-burner stove.  Small TV. Good sized kitchen off sitting room, with views to south and to fields in north.  Fridge, freezer, washing machine, cooker (2 ovens-1 fan). Dining table.  Patio area.
Good sized carpeted double bedroom.  Excellent views to south. Small carpeted bedroom with single bed and stacker bed underneath. View to south. Small single bedroom on roadside of house.  Wood grained floor. Bathroom with shower and small bath.

Telephone, Cleaning included in rent, but visitors expected to treat property with respect.


Prices per week:

Rent:   £150 to £250
Electricity and heating included. Non-smoking.  No pets.
